Starting Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP): What to Expect From Intake
Most people who reach out about KAP arrive with a mix of curiosity and uncertainty — they've heard it can help, but they're not sure if it's right for them, what the process looks like, or where to even begin. Intake is where that uncertainty becomes a clear plan. It's where we build the foundation: clarity on goals, a plan for support, and a treatment pathway that fits your life.
Starting KAP is not just scheduling a dosing session. It is a structured process designed to confirm fit, prioritize safety, and set you up for meaningful, lasting change.
Step 1: Initial contact and scheduling
When you reach out, we will help you determine whether KAP may be a good fit and what information we need to move forward. We will review availability, timing, and general cost considerations.
One thing worth knowing upfront: some portions of KAP may be covered by insurance — including medical clearance, preparation, and integration sessions — while dosing sessions are self-pay. We will walk you through what that looks like for your specific situation.
Step 2: Behavioral health intake (in-person or telehealth)
This appointment focuses on understanding your full picture — what you have tried so far, and what has or has not helped, how your current symptoms are impacting daily life, and what you are hoping to get from treatment, whether that is relief from persistent symptoms, working through something specific, reconnection with yourself or others, or a meaningful shift in perspective. We also look at your support systems, current stressors, and your readiness for change.
Ketamine can create a window for change; what you do with that window is what shapes lasting results. That is why KAP is not just the medication — it is a structured process that includes preparation and integration, and this is where we begin setting those expectations clearly.
Step 3: Medical screening and safety clearance (in-person or telehealth)
KAP includes in-clinic dosing with medical monitoring, so before you begin, we complete a medical and psychiatric screening to ensure safety and appropriateness. This includes a review of your medical history and current medications, blood pressure and cardiovascular considerations, substance use and potential interactions, and coordination with your primary care or prescribing providers as needed. If any adjustments are recommended — such as medication timing, additional support, or pacing — we will outline them clearly so you know exactly what to expect moving forward.
Step 4: Scheduling and logistics
Once you are cleared, we will schedule your preparation, dosing, and integration sessions and walk through timing and spacing so you feel prepared going in. Your preparation session is where we cover the details in depth, but before your first dosing session you will have a clear treatment plan and timeline, guidance around preparation — including sleep, food, hydration, substances, and mindset — a plan for transportation and aftercare, and clear contact information for support between sessions.
Step 5: Preparation session and support planning
KAP works best when there is intention and structure around it. Before your first dosing session, we will guide you through setting intentions and identifying areas you want to explore, understanding what the experience may feel like, building grounding and coping tools, and planning for integration and follow-through. We will also clarify your support plan — some clients continue with their existing therapist with coordination from our team, while others choose to integrate through Inner Journey Healthcare. Either way, you will have a clear path.
Think of it this way: you are the driver, ketamine is the vehicle, and your care team helps with the map. Preparation is where we decide where you are going and how to get there safely.
When intake leads to a different recommendation
Sometimes intake shows that another approach may be safer or more effective right now. If that happens, we will explain why and offer a clear next step — not a dead end.
Ready to start?
You do not need to be certain to reach out. Intake is designed to help you understand whether KAP is the right fit, what safety looks like for your specific situation, and what kind of support will actually help you move forward. Many people leave that first conversation with more clarity than they expected.
