Insomnia Treatment in Missoula, MT

It’s time to sleep again.

Sleep isn’t a luxury; it’s foundational to mood, memory, energy, and healing. If you’re lying awake at 2 a.m., waking too early, or feeling unrefreshed no matter how long you’re in bed, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to keep powering through. At Inner Journey Healthcare, we offer evidence-based, compassionate care to help you reset your sleep and feel like yourself again.

We work with people who struggle to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake too early; those who feel “tired but wired” with daytime fatigue or brain fog; and anyone whose sleep is disrupted by stress, anxiety, trauma, menopause or perimenopause, schedule changes, or long-term reliance on sleep aids. We also support shift workers and people with irregular routines who need a sustainable plan.

Our approach to insomnia care

We combine gold-standard treatment with whole-person support so your sleep improves—and stays improved.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). CBT-I is the first-line, non-medication treatment recommended by leading medical organizations. In a short, structured series of sessions, you’ll rebuild a reliable sleep drive, reduce middle-of-the-night wakeups, and calm the anxious “sleep spiral” while replacing unhelpful patterns with sleep-supportive habits. At Inner Journey, therapist Marcia Brownlee, LCPC, is trained in CBT-I and tailors it to your life, values, and nervous system.

Medical review and collaborative plan. With Family Medicine physician Dr. Joey Banks, we screen for medical contributors such as sleep apnea risk, pain, hormonal changes, thyroid issues, reflux, medication effects, caffeine and alcohol, menopause, and mental health conditions. When needed, we coordinate labs or sleep studies and align your sleep plan with your overall health.

Mind–body tools that fit your nights. We teach brief nervous-system downshifts for bedtime and 2 a.m. wakeups, gentle mindfulness and somatic skills to quiet the inner “sleep critic,” and practical timing of light, movement, and routines to restore your circadian rhythm. When helpful, we integrate care for anxiety, trauma, or grief.

Medications—used thoughtfully. When appropriate, we prescribe or deprescribe with a step-wise, safety-first plan. The goal is the lowest effective support for the shortest necessary time, paired with skills that last.

Care that’s coordinated. Your team communicates. With your consent we collaborate with your primary care provider, therapist, or specialist in Missoula and across western Montana so your plan is cohesive.

What treatment looks like

Your first visit is a comprehensive sleep assessment where we review your sleep history and health, clarify goals, and set up a simple daily sleep log that takes just a couple of minutes. You’ll leave with a personalized plan. Over the next several weeks, you’ll work the core CBT-I elements: right-sized sleep scheduling to rebuild sleep drive, calm-wake protocols for middle-of-the-night awakenings, mind–body settling skills, and practical tweaks to light, caffeine, movement, and timing. If medications are part of your care, Dr. Banks will adjust them as needed. As your sleep consolidates, we fine-tune your schedule for real life—travel, kids, and shift work—and create a relapse-prevention plan so you know exactly what to do when sleep gets bumpy. Visits are available in person in Missoula or by telehealth across Montana when eligible.

Results you can expect

Many people notice better sleep quality and fewer night wakings within a few weeks of consistent CBT-I work. Just as important, you’ll leave with skills to handle future rough patches—illness, stress, or travel—without losing your progress.

Is CBT-I right for me?

CBT-I is effective for primary insomnia and for insomnia related to stress, anxiety, depression, perimenopause and menopause, chronic pain, and PTSD.

FAQs

How long does it take? Most CBT-I plans run four to eight sessions. Some people need fewer; others appreciate a bit more support while we fine-tune.
Do you accept insurance? We accept many insurance plans. Coverage varies by plan and by service type (medical versus therapy). Our team can help you verify benefits and estimate costs.
Will I have to stop my sleep meds? Not necessarily. If tapering is part of your goals, we’ll build a safe, gradual plan. If not, we’ll still use CBT-I so you sleep better either way.
What if I’ve “tried everything”? Many patients come to us after years of patchwork tips. CBT-I is different: structured, evidence-based, and customized to your rhythms and health.
